Each province has a Provincial Ski Organization  ( PSO ) which administers most of the ski races in their province and provides ties to the national organization of Alpine Canada Alpin.  See Provincial Ski Organizations  and US Masters for a complete North American picture. A few races are run strictly on a fun basis without any national sanctions or competitor card requirements.  For all national sanctioned races, including the Rides of March, you must have a national competitors card or a FIS Masters competitor card.  Either card is available through your PSO and the price should be the same, it’s a matter of the registering body. Please note for FIS MASTERS only that there is a general medical form which your family doctor can complete during your annual physical. The competitors card provides for a national race insurance program and provides a competitor card number and ranking system though out the year.  A competitor card is a once a year purchase.  For club members who register for coaching, the cost in Alberta this year the cost is $85. If you register without belonging to our club, the cost is $125.  If you want to ski with us without the desire to race in sanctioned events, our clubs coaching fees include the cost of the general membership.  For those once a year outings all provinces support a weekend competitors card of about $65 without any other strings attached. You can only use this option once per year but you can upgrade to a National card with some credit from your one weekend investment.

WHAT IS MASTERS SKI RACING?

Adult ski racing generally describes any adult alpine ski race. Whether it’s a fun a corporate event, a weekly 'beer league' series or a national or FIS sanctioned event. The common element here is gates. The level of competition and preparation varies enormously. Our Masters group has a stronger focus on National sanctioned events and a stronger emphasis on improving skiing through FIS styled slalom and Giant Slalom races. If you are over 18 you’re a qualified Master.

The realm of Masters Alpine racing is formally applied to a timed run through control gates, ranked by one of 12 age groups for male and female. The Groups for the most part are 5 year increments from 18 to 80+ years old.
For International FIS races the minimum age is 30. All alpine ski races subscribe to an international standard, so races are run with a good deal of protocol and discipline to ensure safety and fairness for all competitors. This also becomes a bit of a daunting task for those new to the sport. We hope we can provide enough direction so that you can hook up with us or another Alpine group and dance through some slalom gates.

In its most recreational sense anyone can ski a giant slalom course without any special equipment. You’ll soon tire of this tortoise like approach and invest in some race skis and slalom armor. Yes we do have to gear up a bit if we are going to challenge the clock. Helmets are mandatory for all training and racing. Fortunately the clock isn’t always that important.

You’ll find our core group training each Monday night at COP and again each non race Saturday (+ some Sundays this year at Nakiska).

Drop ins are welcome, we all have new red jackets and a memorable logo so we should be visible at either area. You’ll find us at some K1 / K2 and J1 races here in Alberta and we  proudly host 1 race this year as part of the Canadian Masters series -The RIDES OF MARCH SG & GS. You will also find us at a lot of fun races like the Bozo Cup, the Bruno Engler race and the Tom Tataryn memorial super slalom.
